Well, almost never. In our world of scooter seats, there are few examples that irk customers more than the stock seat for the 2010-2013 Honda PCX.

With the PCX, Honda decided to mount a small backrest about 2/3 of the way back on the seat. The problem is for anyone over 5 foot 8 inches, or someone with long legs, the area where the backrest is represents the exact spot where riders want to sit. The backrest has come to be called “The Hump.”

We were approached by PCX riders wanting a seat cover to hide the holes in the seat when the Hump is detached. We make several covers like that, and suggest riders simply fill the holes with a rag, bit of foam, and then tape over them, then put our seat cover on. Easy Peasy.

Honda finally wised up in 2014 and changed the design of the PCX seat to be smooth, sans hump.

We love Genuine Scooters, but some of their colors can be very difficult to match, as in the case of this Sea Foam Buddy scooter. It is actually on my bucket list to have lunch with the person/people who decide the color palette for the Genuine scooters, I am honestly interested to learn what goes into that decision making process, and how they arrive at those colors.

The Buddy Sea Foam is more blue than a standard Sea Foam, which is a bit more on the grey side. However, in the use of piping, the eye will work to match the color, it’s the coolest effect and as you see, this looks like a pretty good color match, and our customer was happy.

Had we flanked the seat cover with our Sea Foam vinyl, so that it was touching the panels of the Buddy, the effect would not have been nearly so pleasant, because the eye would immediately pick up on the difference between the two colors.

In general, we recommend that if someone is doing a custom paint job, they consider their seating colors at the same time, because it’s much easier to add just a touch more yellow to paint than it is to find vinyl that has that exact twinge of color.

Adam’s powder blue Genuine Stella goes Tiki!

Our first custom scooter seat cover was made for Adam “Danger”, of the Three Mile Island Scooter Club, in Harrisburg, PA.

“I’m a big guy, I have no hair, and I ride a powder blue Stella,” he wrote, almost as if presenting a challenge.

After contemplating many designs and concepts, we finally settled on a classic Tiki theme. I remember him telling me, “You do this, and all the weirdos are going to come out of the woodwork.”

People ask us how we make our custom seat covers, and are often surprised to learn we do everything by hand, exchanging photographs and mockups  with the customer to show our progress, and to aid in the decision making process.

It is very important to us that we have an open dialogue with the client, so that they feel as much a part of the making process as we do.

Designs are not set in stone with us, they often evolve during the process, and that’s the part I personally enjoy the most.  Working with a computer generated designs where every detail must be adhered to is simply not my style, and takes all the fun out of it!

Our best seat covers are true collaborations, in this case, I really wanted to add a grass skirt option to the seat cover, and Adam wasn’t 100% on board! I finally convinced him by making the grass skirt detachable, Rafa came up with a great solution to make that work. Adam was then happy because he could use the grass skirt for ceremonial purposes, and for his daily riding, went sans skirt.

Finally a spin around the block on our own Stella, such as a trip to Wawa, to see how the seat cover rides, and to make sure that the grass skirt stays firmly attached even at high speeds.
